A recurring soil cover in the Andes, this powerful plant thrives in the most difficult of environments. For centuries, the fleshy root was eaten by Andean shepherds, who also gave it to their cattle. It is believed by locals that maca is an Aphrodisiac Root. Is that correct?

Researchers have discovered that maca appears to promote the health and fertility of animals, an observation that has been supported by research demonstrating that maca increases livestock sperm counts decades later. Many herbs that were formerly supposed to be fertility enhancers later got a reputation as sex stimulants, and this is exactly what occurred to maca.

Is maca root beneficial for improving sex life?

It wasn’t until around ten years ago that this concept began to spread outside of South America when the root popped up in sexual enhancement products in the United States. Is it effective? Recent research has shown some fascinating results, including:

Peruvian experts randomly assigned adult men to receive either a placebo or maca. Despite the fact that maca had no influence on male sperm hormones after eight weeks, it did have a positive effect on sexual drive.

50 men with minor erectile dysfunction were randomly assigned to receive either a placebo or maca, according to Italian researchers. Although both groups reported considerable gains after 12 weeks of treatment, the maca team demonstrated a much larger benefit.

Eight cyclists were assessed about their sexual desire by British academics, who then timed them across a 40-kilometer circuit. After that, the competitors were given either a placebo or maca on a regular basis.

A second poll of sexual desire was administered to the racers after two weeks on the course. When contrasted to the placebo group, the racers who took Peruvian Maca had quicker times and reported having more libido than the control group.

Postmenopausal women in Australia were studied by researchers who collected blood samples from 14 of them. During 6 weeks, the women were randomly assigned to receive either a placebo or maca and then their dosages were exchanged. A second set of blood samples were taken after ingesting maca.

Maca had no effect on the women’s hormones linked to menopause or sexuality, according to the results of their blood tests. Although the women experienced fewer menopausal symptoms, such as worry and despair, they also reported increased sexual performance when taking maca.

Twenty persons suffering from sexual dysfunction induced by antidepressant medication were given one of three treatments at a Hospital in Boston: a placebo, low-dose maca, or high-dose maca. The results were published in the journal Sexual Behavior.

The participants in both maca blocs reported increased sexual desire when compared to those in the placebo group. Improvements in sexual function were also observed in the last group.

The results of these and other studies were analyzed by scientists in South Korea, who came to the conclusion that maca potentially helps improve sexual performance. So, is Peruvian Maca root Aphrodisiac? Maca’s effects on sexual desire go beyond mere stimulation of the imagination.
